Extra time for patients thanks to integrating application

The Business Challenge

Hospital from Switzerland
In healthcare, every hour of physician work is incredibly important. So if the hospital uses many different IT systems that do not communicate with each other, the work is sluggish and inefficient. That does not only waste time and money but more importantly – takes away the attention of physicians from patients.
In the hospital we cooperated with, physicians took a lot of time analysing cases of their patients and drawing conclusions based on them. In a long run, it helped to create better diagnosis and suggest a more effective treatment. The problem was, analysing paperwork about the symptoms and patients’ characteristic was incredibly time-consuming. It took roughly 10 FTE per year only for this task.
What was more, our client was using applications that generated huge costs. Every new user needed a new, costly licence. The data presented by the solutions were complex and non-organized, which made working with it hard. The physicians needed to spend a lot of time generating reports. The huge potential of medical data – symptoms, patient’s characteristics, the treatment, the rate of recovery – was untapped.
Our solution
The best course of action was to create a single point of truth for the multiple applications the client was using. The challenge here was that the applications had different data model, therefore mapping them to one schema was essential.
A team of software engineers implemented a backend application in Node.js to transform GraphQL queries. GraphQL connected back- and frontend together. To make the whole solution easy-to-use, the UX-designer created an intuitive presentation layer, which was later developed in Angular.
Creating charts that convey all the information necessary for users was of utmost importance to us. We made sure that the data is presented in a modern, insightful way to make working with it easily and efficiently.
Benefits
Our solution saves hours of physician work time. Instead of analysing data and looking for patterns, roughly ten specialists can instead devote themselves entirely to working with patients. All those valuable analyses are performed by our application that presents it in comprehensive, easy-to-understand charts and diagrams.
The system generated data that greatly speed up giving diagnoses and suggesting treatment methods. The example report looked like this: for patients between 40 and 50 years old with symptoms like stomach ache and nausea, in 60% of cases, the cause was peritonitis. Thanks to the structured data, the diagnosis time has been significantly reduced.
We eliminated the need to buy extra licenses for new users, which allowed the client to make significant savings without reducing the quality of the assistance provided.
After carefully evaluating suppliers, we decided to try a new approach and start working with a near-shore software house. Cooperation with DSS from Hicron was something different, and it turned out to be a great success that brought added value to our company.
With HICRON’s creative ideas and fresh perspective, we reached a new level of our core platform and achieved our business goals.
Many thanks for what you did so far; we are looking forward to more in future!
